Between the Tides by Patricia Callahan Henry is the story of two families who once upon a time were as close as two families with no blood between them might be. Then one summer night tragedy strikes and lives are potentially destroyed, but thrown off course for sure.

Catherine Leary was twelve when her idyllic life by the sea was taken from her, and she and her family moved to the mountains, so that her father could begin a career as an English Professor at Southern University. That one tragic night before the move continues to haunt Catherine even as she celebrates her thirtieth birthday.

Catherine is now being forced to return to Seaboro, the town she once loved, and has never returned to. It is her father’s last wish to have his ashes spread over the river there. Accompanying her is Forrest Anderson, a protégé of her father’s, and a young man suffering from unrequited love of Catherine.

The journey back to her childhood has the potential to have a profound impact on Catherine, and her current adult life. Will she be able to take what she learns and apply it to her present life?

As Catherine uncovers things in her past she didn’t know she finds a strength that she also didn’t realize she possessed. Would you have her courage to uproot your foundations?

Between the Tides is a thought-provoking book. As you read and discover questions that Catherine’s father asked of Forrest and quotes that he liked to write and post on a bulletin board in his office, you’ll find yourself wondering how you would answer the same questions, and as your life moves forward and the tides of your life ebb and flow would those answers vary? Would those quotes mean different things to you at different times?

If you’re looking for a book that will take you away from the daily drudgery of life than Between the Tides is not the book. However, if you are looking for a book that will help you rethink your life, and perhaps give you some inspiration to make a change then I can recommend Between The Tides.
