UNABRIDGED AUDIO VERSION --- Ophelia Reid is not only the most beautiful woman in England, she also has the nastiest disposition. Aware of her beauty, she uses it to manipulate people and with an uncontrollable temper this lets her bitterness spiel over causing pain and grief to the many recipients. Raphael Locke, Viscount Lynnfield doesn’t like her but after she breaks her engagement to his best friend Duncan, decides the lady needed to be taught some manners. Betting Duncan he can reform and tame the shrew, Rafe “kidnaps” Ophelia and brings her to Alders Nest – a very remote estate in Northumberland. Rafe has maintained he would not be married for some time and was quite adept at escaping the matchmaking efforts of the ton’s mamas. Thinking only of doing a service for Ophelia in showing her the error of her ways, Rafe was not prepared to fall victim to her beauty. But after stripping off Ophelia’s layers of anger and bitterness he discovered a passionate and charming young woman he couldn’t quite live without. *** It has been thrilling rediscovering author Johanna Lindsey’s books available on audio CD. Having been a fan from early on and having a collection of ‘keepers’ by her, it brings immense pleasure to be able to just sit back and ‘listen’ to the books being read aloud by the incomparable voices of Laurel Merlington. Ophelia is a marvelous concoction of beauty and nastiness. The author shows how adept Ophelia was at hiding her true feelings and later makes it clear as to how she became that way. The story covers her disposition extremely well explaining Ophelia’s actions in a totally plausible way both with a touch of humor as well as poignancy. Rafe is a very strong and sensible sort, who manages to accomplish his goal in turning Ophelia into a likeable and warmer person. Unfortunately, he never imagined he could fall in love with the shrew but in uncovering the causes of her anger, he found she was as beautiful, though misunderstood, inside as outside. Rafe’s aunt, his sister, as well as all the other secondary characters added enough depth and amusement to make this a truly heartwarming and engaging story. Add to that the amazing talent of Ms. Merlington’s performance of the different character voices and the listener is gifted with first class entertainment. Bottom line: The story is wonderful, the romance between the leads is romantically sensual and witty enough to leave you fully satisfied and comes with an epilogue (thank goodness) that wraps all loose ends in a very satisfactory manner. Highly Recommended.
