It was once the flagship of the Buchanan family restaurant empire sitting right on the Seattle Waterfront, only now it is ready to sink and eldest grandson Cal Buchanan is called in to save it. The only chef he knows who is at the top of their game right now and might possibly bring it back to its former glory is Penny Jackson – Cal’s ex-wife! For the last few years, Penny has gone out of her way to avoid her ex-husband. She has heard the scuttlebutt regarding the problematic Waterfront Restaurant and is looking forward to making Cal pay dearly – after she makes him crawl a bit first. Holding all the cards, Penny accepts his offer, after Cal agrees to her demands of complete artistic control over her kitchen and ownership of any original recipes she brings to the table. However, what Penny neglects to tell Cal is that she is pregnant, and Cal’s secret of what destroyed their marriage is about to be revealed and any trust built up during the rebuilding of restaurant and romance is about to go down in blazing glory! **** What fun! Not only does author Susan Mallery give the readers a very tasty and sizzling romance, but the descriptions of the dishes Penny cooks up are absolutely mouth-watering! Penny may have sworn off of romance, but her attraction to her ex-husband is still simmering and working with him day in and day out proves that ‘slow cooking’ makes the tastiest of morsels, including romance. The years apart had given both Cal and Penny time to grow, and their new day-to-day interaction was seeming to help them appreciate where they’d gone wrong and help to re-establish better communication. Penny was no longer meek and mild, but now self-assured and aware of her own self worth. Cal was a product of his environment and the hurtful machinations of his evil family matriarch, Grandma Gloria, were not helping any kind of reconciliation. Mixing together a fabulous set of secondary characters, including Penny’s over the top man-eating best friend Naomi, and Cal’s hound-dog brother Reid provided a tremendous amount of fodder for some very humorous moments and witty dialogs. Not only was the story great with lots of secrets being revealed about a host of the main characters, but there were some very tender and emotional scenes as well. While I enjoyed the romance, which was hot, spicy, and sensual, the background detail of what makes a restaurant kitchen hum - the catastrophe’s, and the preparation, etc. was fascinating. The story had strong action and it was paced beautifully. Seeing as how this was Book One of the Buchanan family series, I am really looking forward to discovering even more secrets of this dynamic family in the future books for this very appetizing series. Yes, this book was absolutely DELICIOUS and highly recommended for a super tasty read!
