Danille Galloway is determined to visit her ill brother in Bath and her father’s lack of permission is not going to deter her from accomplishing that goal. Disguising herself as a servant boy, even to the point of cutting off her luxurious hair, ‘Danny’ hits the road on her errand of mercy. She didn’t get far when she was attacked and left bloody in an alley by a couple of thugs who stole her money. Luckily Edward Sterling, the Earl of Tremaine was passing by and took pity on ‘Danny’, saw to his injuries and offers him a job as his page as he and his friend travel to Bath. A confirmed bachelor, would this benevolent gesture end up exchanging Tremaine his freedom for marital bliss?

*** Although the plot of a stubborn woman disguising herself to escape from one thing or another has been done many times, this was rather cute with a couple of  twists that made it quite interesting. One was the awful beating Danny took by the two street thugs that went so far as to mar her face – which as it turned out played well in helping to keep the secret of her sex well hidden. The other was the distinct difference in age between Danny and Tremaine. In the beginning Tremaine was not cast as a young virile man but rather a decent looking chap who seemed somewhat content with the way his life was going.  He was however, questioning his own burgeoning interest in the young page he’d hired which made for some delightful scenarios, both on his part and that of Danny who shared his quarters.

This was a light read with what seemed two mismatched leads making for some very humorous moments. It was shored up with the addition of Tremaine’s best friend Xavier Raleigh whose sometimes ribald comments put the blush on Danny’s cheeks, a clue which helped Tremaine figure out just what seemed off about his page.

Bottom line: This was a wonderful romp through Regency England complete with mild sensuality that was fun and leaves the reader thoroughly entertained.
