Lisa Singleton recently lost her beloved grandmother and inherited her home in San Francisco. Little did Lisa know the apartment came with a special roommate... a 50 foot golden dragon named Caleb. Caleb was sent to protect her because Lisa has a magical heritage she is just about to discover. A black dragon and a wicked witch want to destroy Lisa and steal her magic, each for different reasons. Now Caleb has crossed over from Dragonspace into this world in the body of the most incredibly gorgeous man Lisa has ever seen in order to better protect her. What is this special gift Lisa possesses that so many desire? And how can she be falling in love with a... dragon? Dragon Heat was my first foray into the writing of Allyson James and what a delightful journey it was! In a genre that gets swamped with every new trend as they get popular, we have a highly imaginative and refreshingly original dragon story in Dragon Heat. The intrigue is woven through every facet of the story as we try to figure out what exactly the dragon orb is and why so many are after it. One of the best things about Dragon Heat is the contrast between dark and light, good and bad. While many aspects of the story are quite dark, Allyson James keeps it from being overwhelming by adding plenty of humor to lighten things up. After all, who wouldn’t laugh about a giant warrior dragon who’s addicted to television and keeps stealing the remote control? The romance between Caleb and Lisa is a gradual progression from friends to lovers. After Caleb takes his human form, he is introduced to a whole new variety of emotions he had never experienced before. As Lisa helps him to adapt to his new life as a human, they grow closer until their love is as much a part of them as breathing is. I loved my travels to Dragonspace and San Francisco with Caleb, Lisa, and company in Dragon Heat and look forward to coming back for more visits. © Kelley A. Hartsell, April 2008.
