Rhodri is returning from the Crusades a changed man. When his former, Huw, squire is injured by bandits, Rhodri is desperate to save him. He meets the local healer, Selene, and bargains with her for Huw’s recovery. Rhodri finds himself falling for Selene, but he holds a secret curse that could destroy everything. Does Selene’s gift for healing extend to lifting curses? Will their Beltaine Bargain be the answer to his prayers?

I thought it was interesting that in a shape shifter tale, it is not the traditional phase of the moon that brings on the shift. Normally legends have the full moon being what causes the physical change but in Beltaine Bargain, it is the exact opposite – a new moon – that activates Rhodri’s curse. I also liked the idea of what form he takes during the new moon. How appropriate that his were-form would be the very symbol of King Richard himself, leader of the Crusades. This was a nice touch with a nod to history. It was also different to see Richard painted with the light used here. It is not the usual legends of a great and wonderful king here, but a completely different side to the King.

Beltaine Bargain is a sweet story with just enough spice to tantalize the senses. Selene is a kind and gentle young woman with a magical gift for healing. One touch from her hands is enough to change most anyone, which is exactly what Rhodri needs. Convinced he will never be healed, Rhodri is resigned to a life alone, but wishes for the love Selene would provide. His confusion is real as we experience his longing for a happier life. Selene and Rhodri’s relationship develops quickly but never feels rushed. The development of their love suits the characters’ personalities quite well and provides a nice balance between optimistic Selene and doomed-for-life Rhodri.
