Susan Gable is back and better than ever! Shannon Vanderhoff found out as a young girl that nothing lasts forever and has the mindset “we only ever get to enjoy something for a little while before it’s gone.” As a result, she has locked her emotions up tightly behind a mental door no one is ever getting past. Or so she thought… until her nephew Ryan comes to her. Ryan’s severely traumatized over the death of his mother, having witnessed her murder. He refuses to say a word and is a very scared little boy as a result. Enter Greg Hawkins, comic book writer and art therapist specializing in working with children with cancer or those who have been severely traumatized. Shannon doubts whether or not Greg will be able to help Ryan but she is determined to give it a try. The more time Shannon spends with Greg, the more she finds what she really wants is a family with a charming artist and a little boy, but she doesn’t know how to fight for it. However, A Kid to the Rescue will change their life forever. Wow! Susan Gable gets deep into the heart with her emotional A Kid to the Rescue. As always, she takes very delicate subject matter, a child witnessing his own mother’s murder, and tells the story with sensitivity and ease. This is a very serious topic, but there is enough humor mixed in to keep the book from growing too dark. After all, how can anyone be depressed with wannabe comic book heroes and villains, complete with costumes, popping up everywhere Greg goes? Shannon is a woman who believes emotion only gets you into trouble, after having that lesson hammered into her head her entire life. So she is scarred as well, though in a much different way than young Ryan. It is through Ryan and Greg that she finally begins to realize it is okay to battle when the prize is worthwhile. As Ryan heals from his own wounds, so too does Shannon and together with Greg they find a happiness Shannon never believed she could have. However, while the romance between Shannon and Greg is strong, the true hero, and heart, of A Kid to the Rescue is Ryan. His story is heartbreaking. He starts out as a child withdrawn from everyone and everything after what he went through. Slowly, with his Aunt Shannon and Greg, he begins to heal. His progression through each small step of recovery will warm your heart and make you cheer for him to be the hero everyone is counting on. I fell in love with the precious child and you will too, it’s a guarantee. Welcome back Susan Gable! I’m thrilled we finally have another book from this talented author. A Kid to the Rescue meets all my expectations of anything with the name “Susan Gable” on the cover. © Kelley A. Hartsell, January 2009. All rights reserved. |
