Good Things is the debut novel of author Mia King. When I sat down to read I was hoping for good things as several of my reviewer friends had already read it, and said it was good. Well, I have to be truthful and tell you that I didn’t get a good read. I got a great read! Deidre McIntosh had somewhat floated through life until fate took a turn in intervening by getting her a television show called Live Simple. The show was everything that Deirdre had ever hoped to have, and she blissfully allowed other people to handle pesky details like budgets, both for the show and her personally. When the station manager decides to cancel her show she’s taken totally by surprise. One big reason for the cancellation the fact she’s not balanced in her budget. As it turns out for Deirdre it’s not only the show that’s over budget, but she personally is too. Things go from bad to worse as she finds out that her long time best friend and roommate has finally found a committed relationship, and is planning on moving out. Next thing Deidre knows she’s about to be homeless, and is so adrift she can’t figure out where to go or how to go about getting there. At this point as a reader you’re thinking enough wallowing and self-pitying, but all the wallowing and self-pitying actually starts Deidre on a new and independent life path. As Diedre comes to accept her life she finds that what she thought she wanted and needed aren’t really what she wants and needs. The new more independent Diedre is determined to live life on her terms and under her control. It’s truly satisfying as a reader to see Diedre come into her own, and under her own terms. Along the way there are many delightful secondary characters who subtly assist Diedre in making these changes, and I think not a one amongst us wouldn’t wish for an understanding supportive group of friends, neighbors, and even near strangers to accept us as we are, flaws and all. This first effort by this new author had me turning pages late into the night, and taking every opportunity presented to me to read until the last page was turned. If I were a keeper of books Good Things would make it to my keeper shelf. I look forward to what might be forthcoming from Ms. King. Reviewed by Sandi |
