Lainey Livingston has dreamed of being a member of the Elite Hands of Justice ever since her superpowers emerged. Who wouldn’t want to be part of the premier superhero league, after all? All Lainey, aka PHENOMENAL GIRL 5, has to do now is train for two years with the Reincarnist, a stuffy magician named Robert Elliot. Robert has survived multiple lifetimes but a diabolic plot could cost Robert and Lainey everything… including their chance at love. A.J. Menden takes the superhero world by storm with PHENOMENAL GIRL 5! Lainey is just the sort of character it’s easy to admire. Not only does she have the physical strength of a superhero, she has the sort of pure heart that one expects from a crime fighter. Her dedication to her career is understandable but it is her snarky comments that make her so endearing. And Robert, oh what a superhero the Reincarnist is! He is the ideal hero for Lainey as he wants her to achieve to her highest potential. Robert sees only the best in Lainey even when she can’t. He’s initially a bit gruff but he quickly grows on the reader as his love for Lainey shines through every word and gesture he makes. However, it’s not just A.J. Menden’s main characters who are spectacular. Indeed, all of her characters are well developed. A.J. Menden does a beautiful job at creating a plethora of superheroes and their various powers and yet still making each one distinct. I want to read stories about them all! Even more incredible, though, is the phenomenal job at world building by A.J. Menden. It’s not an easy task to make a character named PHENOMENAL GIRL 5 and her world filled with superheroes, special powers, and diabolical villains come to life… and yet A.J. Menden does exactly that.
