Six children are called to a destiny, to fulfill a prophecy and ensure that the balance between light and dark remains in place. As adults they are constantly vigilant in their roles as part of The Guard. Alexi, Josephine, Jane, Michael, Elijah, and Rebecca each have been given special abilities to assist them in protecting those who are living from the malevolent dead. They’ve been instructed by a goddess to wait for a sign, to wait for the seventh who will complete them. Miss Percy Parker arrives at Athens Academy in 1888, right in the midst of the Ripper slayings. Is Percy Parker the one The Guard has been searching for? And can she finally find love in the arms of Alexi Rychman?

Leanna Renee Hieber excels at crafting a hauntingly beautiful atmosphere in THE STRANGELY BEAUTIFUL TALE OF MISS PERCY PARKER. Her eloquent use of language creates an almost mystical ambiance that is perfect for a supernatural tale involving the Ripper slayings. In fact, the Ripper story has been so overused that it takes a fresh approach such as Leanna Renee Hieber’s to make such a tale enjoyable. The paranormal aspects of the story accentuate the uniqueness of the story, as the visions, ghosts, and scary entities are all integral parts of the phenomenal world building of THE STRANGELY BEAUTIFUL TALE OF MISS PERCY PARKER.

The romance between Percy and Alexi is normally the kind I don’t like. Percy is young, only eighteen, while Alexi is older and her professor. Percy is also very meek and mild-mannered while Alexi is quite grim. And yet… it works! I suspect it is the complexity of the characters and how their destinies fit together that makes the story so intriguing. Regardless, THE STRANGELY BEAUTIFUL TALE OF MISS PERCY PARKER is a tale that I just couldn’t put down! Highly recommended!
