May, a demon-bound thief and doppelganger, finds herself entangled with a houseful of wyverns while trying to return a valuable item that she accidentally stole while on assignment for her demon lord. One very handsome dragon, Gabriel, makes an immediate connection with her, and, to the surprise of both, they discover May is this silver wyvern’s mate. Gabriel and May, along with a mixed cast of characters, many from MacAlister’s previous dragon series, spend the balance of the book trying to stop the opposing forces who would steal precious artifacts which are key to the septs’ survival. I always look forward to a new Katie MacAlister book, and especially anticipated this particular release because of its hero, Gabriel. I, along with many other fans, fell in love with Gabriel, the Silver Wyvern, when he was only a supporting character in the Aisling Grey series. Gabriel more than fulfilled my expectations as the yummy, empathetic, strong hero of Playing with Fire. I thought that MacAlister created a worthy mate for Gabriel in the complex yet very appealing character of May, the demon-bound doppelganger. May is strong, capable, and clever, yet shows a sensitive side that yearns for love and a relationship, even though she doesn’t believe she can have one. Hang on for the delightful roller coaster ride that awaits with this book. Two cautions are necessary, however. First, the MacAlister Otherworld is complex, and an understanding of dragon lore and characteristics is highly recommended. If the reader needs a refresher course in this, I recommend a visit to MacAlister’s online Dragon Handbook for a more organized summary of the dragons. (http://www.dragonsepts.com/dragon_handbook.php). Second caution: This book has a major cliff hanger ending. Up In Smoke, the second Silver Dragon book is not due out until October. Therefore, if you wish to avoid biting your nails to the quick while waiting for the next installment, you might wish to time your reading accordingly. Reviewed by Crystal |
