Jane Yellowrock is a mystery, both to others and herself! Found wandering in the wilds and finishing her childhood years in a group home, Jane has very few memories of who she was before the orphanage. Strange shifts and inner compulsions caused her to leave, and, over time, she has pieced together that she is a part Cherokee skinwalker who can turn into any creature she chooses. Now she is using her unique abilities to be a hired gun for a community of vampires who need a powerful, vampire-killing rouge eliminated. Jane is up for the challenge, just so long as her clients don’t decide to kill her first!

OK. I offer a total gush warning to readers of this review before I go any further, because this is a good one. I wish I had 6 klovers to give Skinwalker, a debut of a new series for Faith Hunter.

Those of you who have been enthralled with the Night Huntress series by Jeaniene Frost will love this new strong and clever female heroine. Hunter creates a multi-faceted character to champion in Jane Yellowrock. Completely focused on finding and eliminating the rogue within the deadline for her sizable bonus, Jane has to deal with challenges not only from the formidable rogue itself, but also from police, vampires, a handsome mystery guy and her own inner “Beast.” The conflict between Jane and her “Beast” adds rich layers to her character, as we are allowed to experience Jane’s vulnerability and confusion over who and what she is.

The descriptions of the raw carnage left behind by the rogue and several other events described are extremely graphic and might disturb some readers, but are also a testament to the ability of Hunter to paint a very vivid picture of the nonstop action in this magnificent adventure.

Run, don’t walk, to your nearest bookseller to get your copy today because I guarantee it will have a permanent place on your keeper shelf. For helpful background about Jane and another of her adventures, check out Hunter’s short story, Signatures of the Dead in the anthology Strange Brew. All the stories in that anthology are good (see my review on this anthology). There is also a prequel Jane story available on the author’s website that all will enjoy. Blood Cross, Hunter’s second Jane Yellowrock novel is due out in January. I can’t wait!
