Who needs a real war when you can create one? As the big wig of The Ares Corporation, one of the largest defense contractors in the world, Nicholas Creel makes his millions off of international conflicts. With the help of Dick Pender, they manufacture a false global incident that puts several superpowers on the verge of war. While Nicholas Creel and Dick Pender look to incite unrest, Shaw’s job is to keep the world safe and at peace. Forced to participate in a multinational intelligence agency, Shaw is ready to retire and settle down with his fiancée. But when she is killed for digging deeper into Creel’s fabrication known as “The Red Menace”, Shaw wants to get even. With the help of Katie James, a washed up journalist desperate to get back to the top of her field, they’ll uncover the whole truth and turn the world upside down. David Baldacci has written a complex, intriguing thriller with a unique premise. Shaw, a man with no first name and a shady past, is a compelling hero and I enjoyed the fresh twist of a “washed up” female journalist. I was happy to see the inclusion of a small romance subplot in THE WHOLE TRUTH, which was reminiscent of The Winner, one of my absolute favorite David Baldacci novels. Baldacci is the master of pacing. There is never a dull moment in his books. Each scene is vital to the plot, and the chapters unfold in a fast rhythm that keeps the reader engrossed. One of the things I love about Mr. Baldacci’s books is his ability to create fictional scenarios out of current world events. Though some might think the act of manufacturing wars to be far fetched, Mr. Baldacci provides enough real-life detail to make readers believe in the possibility. Though the last couple David Baldacci books have been hit or miss for me, I’m happy to say that THE WHOLE TRUTH was right on target. I enjoyed every minute of this fabulous international thriller. With its tight plotting and its captivating subject matter, readers will be hard pressed to put this one down. Reviewed by Cindy |
