The Puritan community is filled with rules: how to dress, what to believe, how to live one’s life. Susannah Phillips has tried hard to abide by these rules in order to earn God’s favor. But when an outsider comes to Stoneybrooke, he challenges Susannah to question her faith. Caught between two very different men—one who seeks to possess her, the other who just wants to love her unconditionally—Susannah must choose between following the rules or following her heart. Rarely does a book leave me speechless like LOVE’S PURSUIT. It is, without a doubt, one of the most powerful books I have ever read. Siri Mitchell’s beautiful prose drew me in from page one and once I started reading I found that I simply could not stop. Ms. Mitchell’s attention to detail immerses readers into the Puritan community, creating a world that seemed so real to me that I couldn’t bear to let go of the characters. Told in first person point of view from the perspective of two women, readers are treated to a captivating juxtaposition between Susannah, the good and dutiful daughter, and Small-hope, the ignored, ostracized wife of the Towne’s blacksmith. As Susannah starts to fall for the outsider, the upstanding Towne also begins to slowly unravel, revealing deception and malice among some of the pillars of the community. Susannah starts to wonder if there is more to God than the Puritans believe, and soon she realizes that it has taken love’s pursuit in order to find God’s grace. Though I can’t say the book has a traditional happy-ever-after ending, it does have a hopeful one that will leave you with a deeper understanding of faith, forgiveness, and God’s unconditional love. And as I read over this review, I already know that I haven’t been able to do the book justice. Suffice it to say that this one is highly recommended! LOVE’S PURSUIT is emotionally gripping and profound. It is also a book that I will treasure. Siri Mitchell has quickly become one of my favorite authors and I absolutely cannot wait for her next book. Reviewed by Cindy |
