Patrick MacGregor lost everything when his parents were murdered and his clan's land was stolen. Now a wanted man, he and his clan are forced to hide out in the Highlands, scrounging for food and shelter. But the time has come for him to take back what rightfully belongs to the MacGregor's and save his clan from destruction--even if he has to marry Elizabeth Campbell, the daughter of his worst enemy, to succeed. Lizzie Campbell has always prided herself on being the dutiful daughter. She knows her responsibilities and will do what is necessary to fulfill them. However, when a handsome stranger saves her life, she is suddenly torn between duty and desire. And she's not the only one. Though Patrick had sought to use Lizzie as a means to an end, he can't control the hunger that consumes him whenever she is near. Can their love overcome the hate that divides their two clans? Way back when I started reading romances, I absolutely adored Scottish historicals. Who can resist the lure of strong Highlanders full of Honor and a love for their Clan? But as time went on, it seemed that good Scottish historicals became few and far between. So when I received HIGHLAND OUTLAW, I wasn't convinced that it would hold my interest; however, on a friend's recommendation, I decided to give it a try--and was immediately hooked. From the first page, Monica McCarty sets up a sensual, lyrical story, chock full of conflict. Patrick is a hero that finds his way into the reader's heart immediately. Though he is a wanted man, he lives by his own code of honor. It is a code that tears him apart, however, when he starts to fall for Lizzie. While he doesn't want to abuse her trust, he knows he must deceive her if he is to get her to agree to run away with him. Each decision he is forced to make as the story progresses has the power to hurt either his Clan or Lizzie. Nothing is easy for Patrick, and my heart broke for him several times throughout the book. Lizzie is the perfect counterpart for Patrick. Soft and compassionate with a wide streak of mother hen, she knows her duties well and competently sees to them. Yet, she also has a fire in her and is not afraid to stand up for what she believes is right. Her attraction to Patrick causes her to question her judgment. Is it wrong to choose happiness over duty? That is a question that Lizzie must find the courage to answer. Peppered with intricate historical details, HIGHLAND OUTLAW kept me on the edge of my seat and the passion between Patrick and Lizzie left me breathless as I devoured the pages. HIGHLAND OUTLAW is the kind of poignant story that reaches out and grabs her heart. It is a story that is not easily forgotten. Monica McCarty is now a new author on my 'must read' list. HIGHLAND OUTLAW is a highly recommended read.
